Mechanical Joint (MJ) Fitting Installation Procedure

This training video walks through the proper installation of a mechanical joint (MJ) fitting used in underground water main systems. The procedure focuses on component identification, assembly order, and correct tightening techniques to ensure a secure and leak-free connection.

The video outlines each part of the MJ assembly, including the gland, gasket, bolts, and nuts. Proper positioning of the gasket and alignment of the fitting are emphasized before tightening begins. Ensuring the gasket is evenly seated around the pipe is critical to preventing leaks and maintaining joint integrity.

The crew demonstrates installing bolts and tightening hardware in a consistent pattern to ensure even compression around the gland. The use of appropriate tools is reinforced, along with maintaining alignment while tightening to avoid shifting the gasket or binding the hardware.

Attention is placed on maintaining proper depth and positioning prior to full torque. Even tightening and final inspection of hardware are shown as part of the standard procedure.

This installation process is critical for maintaining system integrity during pressure testing and long-term operation. The video is intended for pipe crews, operators, and foremen responsible for mechanical joint water system installations.
